I promise to do my best to update you on my growing season. Below are examples of what goes on at StoneAgers Farms.
The perfect little get-a-way cabin by the sea.
I love my little She Shed right across from Teach's Lair Marina.
I realize now why they call them the Carolina Reaper. After 36 years of gardening from Virginia, to Maryland, to Sunny California and now to Hatteras, NC, I don't know if I've ever had a plant shower me with so much fruit. We must have the perfect environment for these chilis, thus the name, The Carolina Reaper...the hottest pepper in the world!
Or...The Magma Carta, as we call it. There's just no taming these kings of heat. Just for reference, a jalepeńo pepper hangs around the Scoville Scale around 5,000 heat units while our Carolina Reaper hits the charts around 1,800,000-2,200,000 million heat units.
We love the display in the Corolla Location of the Cottage Shops! Bug protection is often overlooked when planning a beach vacation and the staff at the Cottage Shops make sure it's not forgotten! Thank you!
We took a couple eggs the chickens were sitting on, put them under a heat lamp and hatched out 3 little ones. Seen here , Ellie May rummaging through the tobasco plants.
Sometimes, just sitting quietly can do wonders for the soul.
I always look forward to visiting my customers in Ocracoke. It just isn't work when you are doing what you love and believe in.
We are proud to partner with the owner of Adiós! Mo Skitos! , a local Hatteras Company making the ultimate all-natural mosquito, no-see-um, flea, tick and biting fly repellent. Check out our on-line store for your supplies!
This year, we decided to plant the cukes in the chicken run to protect our main garden from their over growth. We watch in wonder how they grew up the wire of our coop.
My basil keeps me busy making pesto
With a little help from some toasted pine nuts, evoo, imported Parmigiano Reggiano, and some home grown garlic, we transformed our field of basil into a freezer full of pesto.
Another sizzling sunset on the Pamlico Sound. It's always a reason for friends and family to gather and celebrate!
Life is just a Bowl of Cherries
We just can't keep up....
We're allowed to play with our vegetables on StoneAgers Farms.
My basil keeps me busy making pesto
These girls are so excited to meet their new roomates: garlic & basil.
After two days of rain, I found these free-loaders on one of my girls. Sorry, Spider Mites, you gotta go.
Oh there's a Mediterranean Salad on the horizon...
Three hours later with some crumbled Feta and garlic toasts. This is why those Mediterraneans live so long...because they WANT to keep eating this salad.
Fresh Oregano, Dill and Rosemary on a Bed of fresh Italian Parsley
Big Boy was just a regular guy...until he wasn't. At his heaviest, he weighed in at 1.075lbs.
Getting ready to be part of the best tomato soup we have ever tasted.
Being picked as a teen, Big Boy trimmed down to an even pound to give us that "dry-aged" taste we love so much. It was hard not slicing him for a BLT but the soup is that good!
I can withstand small floods on the ground floor if grown in deep pots.
The Belle of the Ball
The possibilities are endless...
It's what's for breakfast.
Kicking back and relaxing on a hot summer's day
It's what for dinner on Hatteras Island.
This section of the garden is dedicated to tomatoes, peppers and herbs.
Today's Harvest : 7/2/22
You can pick tomatoes as soon as they begin to change color? They will contine to ripen in a sunny window or counter. This frees up all that energy in the plant for the other newer and greener tomatoes
The ancient herb Sage means "To heal" in Latin?
I'll take a bucket...
This is why you prune and check your garden every day. These guys will take a beautiful healthy tomato plant from:
This was a healthy plant bursting with fruit Wednesday.
The same plant Thursday morning. So much destruction in 24 hours.
They love Dill. Who knew? Ididn't. Oh well, time to feed chickens!
I knew something was wrong when I peeked in on my peppers after a two day deluge and saw my girl drooping, as if she hadn't had water in days, when all the other peppers were thriving. As you can see, she was telling me she had "the crabs"(otherwise known as Spiker Mites). I immediately sprayed her with water and Dawn. She's isolated and it's touch-and-go in the ICU right now with family and friends close by. I willl keep you posted on her recovery. Thank you for all the thoughts and prayers.
StoneAgers Farms is dedicated to no pesticides on the farm. I use all natural products such as my chickens, castor oil, Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth and Dawn dishwashing liquid to combat most of the dangers.
What will you make with yours?
